Your overall percentage includes all subjects (like English, Computer Science, or Physical Education). Your cut-off mark, however, is calculated strictly based on the core subjects related to your stream:
- For Engineering (Science – Maths): Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
- For Medical (Science – Biology): Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
Furthermore, in many states (like Tamil Nadu), this cut-off is not calculated out of 100 or 600. It is mathematically reduced to a standardized score out of 200. This makes comparing students from CBSE (who write exams out of 100 per subject) and State Boards (who write out of 200) fair and equal.
The 12th Cut-Off Calculation Formula (Out of 200)

Engineering Cut-Off Formula (Maths Stream)
Cut-Off = (Mathematics Marks / 2) + (Physics Marks / 4) + (Chemistry Marks / 4)
Medical Cut-Off Formula (Biology Stream)
Cut-Off = (Biology Marks / 2) + (Physics Marks / 4) + (Chemistry Marks / 4)
Why divide like this? Mathematics/Biology is given 50% weightage (divided by 2), while Physics and Chemistry are given 25% weightage each (divided by 4). This adds up to exactly 200.

- Maths: 178 / 200
- Physics: 165 / 200
- Chemistry: 170 / 200
